Prayer

The following are the points given in a talk on prayer

1. Getting to know God
First time in church

They who pray not, know nothing of God, and know nothing of the state of their own souls.
Adam Clarke

Therefore talking to God, communication, is the beginning of being 'like' God.
Roger Forster [Prayer - living in the breath of God, page 5]

Prayer is taking our troubles to God. Faith is leaving them there.
Author unknown

This, then, is how you should pray: ?Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
Matthew 6:9

2. We are in God?s image
Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. Gen 1:26 NASB

3. Prayer is to a personal God
It happened that while Jesus was praying in a certain place, after He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, "Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples."

And He said to them, "When you pray, say: 'Father, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Luke 11:1-2 NASB

4. God is an awesome God
The Milky Way is the galaxy which is the home of our Solar System together with at least 200 billion other stars (more recent estimates have given numbers around 400 billion).

God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night; He made the stars also. Genesis 1:16 NASB

The power of prayer depends almost entirely upon our apprehension of who it is with whom we speak.?
Andrew Murray

5. Prayer is through Jesus
You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you. John 15:16 NASB

Our prayers, like cheques, are written in a name. The name on our prayers is Jesus Christ.
